Among all welding methods, from shielded metal arc welding to gas-shielded arc welding, this process is indeed relatively unique. In conventional industrial welding practices, it often appears to rely solely on the use of a coating material applied to the workpieces being joined; however, in reality, it is not as mysterious as it seems. Its underlying principle is, in fact, very similar to that of shielded metal arc welding. Submerged Arc Welding Flux Its function is similar to that of the coating on the welding electrode.

 Submerged Arc Welding Flux

I. Submerged Arc Welding Flux The role in steel pipe production.

1 ) Protective effect.

Under the action of arc heat, part of the weld metal melts, forming slag and generating a shielding gas that effectively isolates the weld from atmospheric air, thereby protecting the molten droplets, weld pool, and weld zone. This prevents oxidation of the weld metal and loss of alloying elements, and enhances the stability of the welding process. This is also a form of arc welding. The primary characteristic of arc welding is the melting of metallic materials; however, if the weld area is not properly isolated from the atmosphere during this process, excess oxides may form in the weld, alloying elements may be depleted, and undesirable nitrides may develop. To effectively mitigate the detrimental effects of oxygen and nitrogen, it is essential to maintain a physical barrier between the molten metal and the surrounding air during welding. By utilizing the shielding gases and slag produced during welding, the liquid metal can be effectively isolated from the atmosphere, ensuring the desired mechanical properties of the weld metal and preventing defects such as porosity, cracks, and slag inclusions.

2 ) Metallurgical effects.

During the welding process, it functions as a deoxidizer and alloying element, and when properly matched with the welding wire, ensures that the weld metal meets the specified chemical composition and mechanical properties.

II. Submerged Arc Welding Flux performance.

1 ) Metallurgical properties.

It shall exhibit excellent metallurgical properties, with appropriate welding wire and a well-defined welding procedure. Welded metals shall have appropriate chemical composition and excellent mechanical properties—namely, strength compatible with the base metal, as well as high ductility and toughness—and exhibit strong resistance to both cold cracking and hot cracking.

2 ) Process performance.

It should exhibit excellent weldability, stable arc combustion, appropriate melting point, viscosity, and surface tension. The weld bead and weld pass shall be fully fused with the base metal, with smooth transitions and no noticeable undercut; slag removal should be easy, the weld surface should have a good appearance, and the generation of harmful gases during welding should be minimal.

Welding requires a certain particle size; it must not be too “powdery.” It must also possess a certain particle strength to facilitate multiple cycles.

3 ) Moisture content and moisture resistance.

The quality score based on the factory moisture content shall not be affected by more than 0.10 percent , Welded at temperature 25 °C, relatively high humidity 70 under % environmental economic conditions , Place 24 hours, Its moisture absorption rate shall not exceed 0.15 %.
