On the morning of April 30, the 2024 Commemoration of International Labor Day and the Henan Provincial Conference for Model Workers and Advanced Workers were solemnly held at the Henan Provincial People’s Hall, where 849 model workers and 342 advanced workers from Henan Province were honored. Hu Changqing, an electrician at Zhengzhou Fenghuang New Materials Technology Co., Ltd., recommended by the Gongyi City Federation of Trade Unions, was awarded the title of “Henan Provincial Model Worker” by the CPC Henan Provincial Committee and the Henan Provincial People’s Government. This recognition marks another prestigious honor for Hu Changqing, following his previous awards as a Gongyi City Model Worker in 2018 and a Zhengzhou City Model Worker in 2023.

1. Time flies, yet my heart holds a special affection.
Born in October 1974, Hu Changqing has worked since graduating from high school in 1994. In addition to his tenure in his hometown of Gongyi, he has also held positions in Qinghai, Shanghai, Tianjin, and other regions. Over the past 30 years, he has served at a total of 10 organizations, yet he has never strayed from the role of electrician. It is precisely through his unwavering dedication and deep passion for this seemingly ordinary job that he has achieved remarkable results, earning praise from both management and colleagues.
2. Take the first step and do a little more.
In 2013, Hu Changqing, approaching the age of forty, joined Zhengzhou Phoenix Company. At the time, the company was in its early stages of development, with numerous tasks demanding attention and challenging working conditions and a heavy workload. As an ordinary electrician, he took part in every phase of the project, from wiring power equipment to laying power and lighting cables in the production workshops and commissioning production machinery. Faced with complaints and dissatisfaction from some employees, he remained undeterred, driven by a simple yet sincere sense of responsibility to perform his duties to the best of his ability. No matter how complex or specialized the machinery being installed or replaced, he patiently and meticulously sought guidance from the manufacturers’ engineers, collaborating with them to discuss potential operational issues and ways to avoid them, thereby ensuring that all engineering equipment within his area of responsibility was installed and commissioned to an excellent standard.
3. Part-time Inspector: Safety First
At the work site where Hu Changqing is stationed, you will frequently hear a clear yet tirelessly repeated refrain: “Pay attention to safety!” “Safety is right by your side!” “Safety is everyone’s responsibility!”—such safety reminders are as commonplace for Hu Changqing and his coworkers as daily meals. He not only insists on cultivating his own heightened safety awareness but also constantly educates and guides his fellow workers in the workshop, continuously raising the safety consciousness of the entire team. Whenever he discovers anyone engaging in unsafe or non-compliant work practices, his first response is to offer criticism and education, followed by appropriate disciplinary action. He shows no leniency toward rule-breakers; as he often says, “I’d rather endure my coworkers’ scolding than hear the cries of their families.” It is precisely because of his unwavering impartiality that the electrical workshop under his supervision has never experienced a single workplace injury or mechanical–electrical accident caused by improper electrical practices. His colleagues affectionately call him the “Workshop Inspector.”
4. Unparalleled Craftsmanship, Dedicated to Society
Hu Changqing works at Zhengzhou Fenghuang New Materials Technology Co., Ltd., a leading enterprise in the submerged-arc welding flux industry, where numerous process innovations and upgrades would be impossible without his active involvement as a lifelong electrician. Taking the routine replacement and upgrading of screening meshes as just one example, under his leadership and following repeated on-site parameter adjustments and tests by the technical team, the service life of these meshes was doubled compared with the original design, generating direct economic benefits exceeding one million yuan.

In 2018, the company imported natural-gas burners from overseas. However, due to differences in production environments and natural-gas standards between China and foreign countries, the imported burners frequently experienced unexplained flameouts, each of which resulted in raw-material losses amounting to tens of thousands of yuan. Faced with this high-cost equipment that “went on strike” twice every day, the company’s top leaders were deeply distressed, and even the original manufacturer’s technical-service experts were left at a loss.
As an electrician, he was deeply concerned about the situation. To fully understand and master the operating principles of this exorbitantly priced piece of equipment, he worked with the manufacturer’s engineers to procure specialized technical manuals. Through numerous rounds of functional optimization and commissioning, the equipment’s performance improved steadily: from two flameouts per day to one per day, then to one every week, and eventually to just one per month. These repeated trials led Hu Changqing to ponder a key question: could he install an alarm system for the equipment, much like those used in fire alarm systems? To explore this idea, he devoted his spare time to studying relevant technical literature. After six successive upgrades and refinements, he finally developed a comprehensive electrical-system alarm for the burner in 2019. Following extensive testing, the new system virtually eliminated abnormal flameouts, reducing the company’s annual gas costs by several million yuan as a result.
