Bauxite, whose main component is various forms of alumina, is a hydrous aluminum oxide that may contain substantial impurities and is classified as an earth-like mineral. It occurs in white, grayish-white, brownish-yellow, or pale red hues due to its high iron content. Its density is 3.45 g/cm³, its hardness ranges from 1 to 3, it is opaque, and it is brittle. Bauxite is extremely difficult to melt. It is insoluble in water but soluble in standard solutions of sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide. It is used in the smelting of aluminum and in the manufacture of refractory materials.

Introduction to the Applications of Bauxite Clinker and Classification of Its Usage Scenarios

Homogenized bauxite

Alumina bauxite suppliers define homogenized bauxite as clinker produced from raw bauxite slurry (at 1,560–1,600°C) through a series of processing steps, including mineral separation, crushing, grinding, pelletizing, shaping, drying, and calcination. The prioritized treatment and fine grinding during the technical preparation process ensure uniform mixing of the material prior to calcination, thereby enhancing the safety and stability of the properties of the homogenized product. Currently, most commercially available products are homogenized bauxite with an alumina content of approximately 80% to 85%. Bauxite containing about 80% alumina is typically used for refractory materials in iron-smelting systems, whereas bauxite with an alumina content of around 85% is more suitable for steelmaking applications and associated refractory systems.

High-alumina bauxite

Ordinary bauxite clinker is clinker produced by processing bauxite, directly fired in a shaft kiln at temperatures of 1550–1600°C. Because this process involves the direct charging of bulk material into the shaft kiln, the properties of the finished product differ. Due to its relatively simple production technology, the process for ordinary bauxite offers more favorable cost management.

Bauxite Supplier: Applications of Bauxite Clinker:

⑴ Aluminum smelting industry.

Used in China’s defense, aerospace, automotive, electrical appliances, chemical, and daily consumer goods industries, among others.

(2) Precision casting.

Bauxite clinker is processed into a fine powder to make molds, which are then used for precision casting. Suitable for medium country Sectors such as aerospace, communications, instrumentation, mechanical engineering, and medical technology equipment.

(3) Used in refractory products.

High-alumina bauxite clinker exhibits a refractoriness as high as 1780°C, with strong chemical structural stability and excellent physical safety performance.

⑷ Aluminosilicate refractory fiber

It boasts advantages such as light self-weight, high-temperature resistance, excellent thermal stability, low thermal conductivity, small heat capacity, and strong resistance to mechanical structural vibration. It is widely used in industries including iron and steel, nonferrous metallurgy, electronics, petroleum, chemical engineering, aerospace, nuclear energy, and national defense. The production process involves charging high-alumina clinker into a high-temperature electric arc furnace operating at approximately 2,000–2,200°C, where the material is melted under intense heat. Subsequently, high-pressure technology is employed to inject air or steam, which cools the molten material and transforms it into a white, cotton-like substance—aluminosilicate refractory fiber. This fiber can be compressed into blankets or boards, or woven into fabrics, serving as a replacement for refractory bricks in the linings of high-temperature furnaces in smelting, chemical processing, glass manufacturing, and other industries. Firefighters can even fabricate protective clothing from refractory fiber cloth.

Bauxite is classified into:

1. Refractory-grade bauxite;

2. Grinding-grade bauxite;

3. Electrode-grade bauxite;

The foregoing constitutes a detailed description of bauxite clinker. Owing to the versatility and relative simplicity of bauxite, its exploitation has been increasingly pursued. However, the production of high-quality bauxite clinker still requires certain technological expertise.
